Dundee is an active and friendly city situated near the mouth of the River Tay in the county of Angus, on the East coast of Scotland. Dundee is Scotland's fourth largest city, it offers a fine quality of life with more hours of sunshine and cleaner air than any other city in Scotland. The City of Dundee offers something for all members of the family; attractions including Camperdown Park, Law Hill, Discovery Point, McManus Galleries, Verdant Works etc. Activities include fly fishing at Kingennie Fishings which is situated in the rolling countryside near Dundee and dates back to 1855, this idyllic location has long been a favourite haunt of anglers. For skating fans there is the Dundee Ice Arena which can be found at Camperdown Leisure Complex. Camperdown Country Park Camperdown Country Park is the largest public park in Dundee and owes its name and fame to the victory of Admiral Adam Duncan over the Dutch fleet in 1797 at the Battle of Camperdown, off the Dutch coast. The park which is home to no fewer than 190 species of trees, was opened to the public in 1949. The park serves as a backdrop for a variety of special events taking place throughout the year. Kingennie Fishings Kingennie Fishings is home to some of Scotland's most famous trout and coarse fishing waters and provides excellent fishing for experts and beginners alike. Bait and fly-fishing is available on the four well stocked pools. Kingennie Fishings hosted the Scottish National Coarse Fishing Championships in 2003 and attracts in the region of 10,000 anglers each year. The new facilities at Forbes of Kingennie will help more people enjoy the pleasures of angling whilst still maintaining the high standards set over the last nine years. Fishing lessons are available for adults and children. Kingennie Fishings operates an ongoing competition, which allows anglers the opportunity to win a cash prize. To enter the competition each angler is invited to put 50 pence into the 'fish pot'. The first person to catch the tagged fish wins the 'fish pot', which could be up to several hundred pounds. Law Hill Taking its name from an old Scots word for a hill, Dundee Law, or Law Hill, is a conical mass of volcanic basalt forming the highest point in the city of Dundee. It rises to a height of 174m (571 feet). An Iron Age hill fort once occupied the site on which now stands a memorial to the dead of World War I erected in 1923. The Beacon of the memorial is lit on four occasions each year: 25th September, in memory of the Battle of Loos where many local men serving in the Black Watch lost their lives; 24th October, for United Nations Day; Remembrance Sunday; and 11th November, Armistice Day. |
